The 2006 Community Breakfast: students rise to the challenge at Laval Liberty and Laval Junior High Schools
Since the founding of Laval Liberty High School and Laval Junior High School two years ago, school spirit, sportsmanship and endless support have been the crucial factors in their rising reputations as productive centres of learning, living and sharing.
organize the breakfast ourselves. From start to finish, it was up to us to make it the best it could be.
Regardless of our different cultures, personalities and opinions, our ideas came together. Every suggestion made by our class was acknowledged and as a result the event diversified, attracting many more participants. A few changes our class made, such as serving breakfast to seated guests, created a more relaxed atmosphere for everyone.
Over forty student waiters and waitresses, under the supervision of teachers Ms. Irene Tsoflikis, Ms. Vicky Zoes and Ms. Demetra Lambropoulos, served breakfast to this year’s appreciative guests. Level Five student Amanda Freitas-Perreira recruited and organized the many students who worked together. Waiters and waitresses dressed according to the holiday season and were happily there to cater to everyone’s needs.
"Such a good time!"
Level Five student Maria Tsilis commented on her waitressing experience, “Although waiting on the public was hectic, we had such a good time.”
As in previous years, Ms. Crystal Walters organized teachers at both Laval Junior and Laval Liberty High School to prepare the food. From coffee to pancakes, they made it all, and it tasted fabulous.
With activities going on during and after breakfast, students continued to celebrate until mid-day.
Thanks to the school band, the bingo match, hip-hop and Greek dancing, singing, treasure hunt, ornament and card making, fundraising by Ms. Edgerley’s special education class, prizes donated by generous sponsors, and finally a successful multicultural fashion show, we partied into the December holidays on a good note.
Throughout the celebration, students were reminded that they were fundraising for less fortunate community members. Jared Corallo, Secondary Five student said, “I’m glad I had so much fun for such a good cause!”
Students celebrated the unity of the school community, basking in the cheery atmosphere brewing in the halls. Secondary Five student Janani Sivakumaran remarked, “The community united so well. I never expected to see something like this on a regular school day.”
Secondary One and Two students from Laval Junior High School made a phenomenal contribution by helping out in almost every aspect of this event, such as decorations, pre-preparations, and waitressing. Many junior students attended the Community Breakfast with family members this year and we thank them for collaborating with senior students to raise an impressive sum for our donation.
We hope to have left a good impression on the public who so generously attended the breakfast in large numbers, and that we have inspired the organizers of future Community Breakfasts.
Have you ever picked up a book, noticed its plain cover and put it down? Sometimes observers underestimate our schools. But we know that our school life tells a whole other story, and the 2006 Community Breakfast is a good example of the many significant and positive dimensions that make up these two communities at 3200 Souvenir Boulevard.
